Martha’s Writing Workshop provides
a safe, nurturing environment where participants are given the opportunity
to express themselves honestly through the written word.
Through her own experiences and observations during
group and private therapy sessions, Martha concluded that putting
things down on paper helps us to gain perspective. Moreover, the
process of writing allows participants to transform the unresolved
stresses and traumas disturbing them into coherent stories. It is
this process of putting order and structure to our feelings about
these situations or incidents that relieves the stress that contributes
to illness.
Writing about traumatic events on a regular basis
has been documented to relieve tension and boost immune function.
More importantly, writing about stressful experiences can alleviate
the physical symptoms of disease because it influences both endocrine
and immune functions, the production of stress hormones and the
immune system’s response to challenges.
Martha understands that writing allows us to transform
fears, misgivings and worries cluttering our minds into coherent
stories. Venting our emotions verbally fails to produce the same
benefits that this writing task does. That’s because, as we
generate descriptions of traumatic or stressful experiences and
put these down on paper, we form them into orderly narratives and
they become manageable. The process of writing about these events
on a regular basis helps to relieve tension and diminish mental
anguish and physical discomfort.
Although Martha did not design this workshop to enhance
participants’ literary creative writing techniques, it has
proven very effective for writers and other artists. By undergoing
this workshop artists are better able to access their inner truths
and originality. With less anxiety impeding their creativity, their
writing flows more freely and has more integrity and joy.
Martha conducts her Writing
Workshop at retreats, spas, health facilities, colleges and
