As part of our commitment to the cultural life of
our Brooklyn community, Sierra Brooklyn is pleased to present
the work of Brooklyn-based artists in our Gallery space at 438
6th Avenue.
The exhibitions will feature local artists working in several
mediums, including painting, photography, collages and sculpture.
This commitment is an extension of a long-established art patronage
by the Sierra companies, in recognition
of the invaluable contribution that the arts community makes to
our city.
These exhibitions will be held on a two-month rotating basis, and
will be open to the public during regular office hours. The program
is curated by Gale P. Elston, Esq., of the White Box Gallery in
Manhattan. The works displayed are available for purchase. In addition,
these exhibitions will operate in conjunction with the Leslie J
Garfield annual art award.
Our current exhibition contains works by Lauren
Asta.
Lauren received her BA in Studio Art from CSU Chico State with
a split emphasis in photography and electronic art. Upon graduating,
she spent the following two years in her native San Francisco Bay
area managing a paper and art supply store while teaching classes
in its art educational center. As a result of being exposed to an
endless supply of paper, color, tools and texture, as well as instructional
resources, Lauren developed and administrated a class specializing
in “artist trading cards” (ATC’s)—tiny works
of art (2.5” x 3.5”) that use several different collage
techniques. Facilitated by the thriving community surrounding this
form, she was inspired to trade her art by mail around the country
as well as overseas, and encouraged her students to do the same.
The environment molded her approach to art into one using paper,
scissors and glue exclusively—a stark contrast to her formal
training. While teaching these classes for almost a year, she succeeded
in developing a unique style, creating several hundred characters
and a tiny world unto itself. Lauren moved to Brooklyn in February
2006 to further develop and pursue her art and career. Her current
exhibit showcases her most recent paper oddities and creations.
